Dr. Darrell Dooyema’s presentation of “The Audiological Argument for the Existence of God” at the UCCS Ratio Club 3/20/2026:

BOA Questions taken from Darrell and Jared Dooyema’s paper on “The Audiological Argument for the Existence of God”:
1. Is it possible that the existence of God can be proven through music?
2. What is the value of music as an apologetic argument?
3. Peter Kreeft, writes “There is the music of Johann Sebastian Bach. Therefore, there
must be a God. You either see this one, or you don’t.” Agree or Disagree?
4. Do the high levels of design found in music and the universal principles of what can be called musical
grammar point to design features in the universe, bringing depth to the Teleological Argument?
5. Do the complex biological systems necessary to receive music bear the marks of Irreducible
Complexity and Fine-Tuning?
6. Does the intense first-person experience of music strengthen the Argument from Consciousness?
7. Does the experience of musical beauty in the world contribute to the Argument from Aesthetics?
8. Since music is particularly powerful in its ability to create experiences of transcendence, does it bring depth to the argument from Religious Experience?
9. Does music move us to consider the larger Cosmological question in a new way, pondering
what could qualify as a first cause of our complex experience of music?
10. Is our experience with music a reflection of us being created in the image of God?
11. So what is happening when you hear your favorite music, is it just a naturalistic reaction, or does it more accurately reflect a design and a Designer?
12. Could music be a method for the Designer to draw your attention to Himself?

Additional BOA questions:
1. What is your personal relationship to music?
2. How is it, and what is it, that explains that a piece of music can move us emotionally, even when it’s instrumental only?
3. How does the incredible design, intricacy and accuracy of the human hearing system inform your view of this argument?
4. If you are a musician yourself have you ever had a transcendent experience when producing music? Personally I’ve noticed that on guitar, once you know your instrument to the point of muscle memory, you can occasionally make up something on the fly that seems magical, and gives you that “where did that just come from” experience.
5. What about you athletes, have you noticed like my son said, that music can provide power and energy when doing athletic activities such as weight lifting, running, etc?
6. What activities do you use music for, helping to concentrate and study, helping your mood, going to sleep, celebrating, worshiping?
7. If you truly love and are moved by music, and many if not most are, are you willing to consider a relationship with the Author of music?
